Miss Elam driver wins record 10th at Seafair

Villwock wins Seafair, halves David’s points lead

Dave Villwock had lane one and never let go, cruising to an easy win aboard the U-16 Miss Elam Plus at the Chevrolet Cup at Seafair in Seattle on Sunday.
Villwock had a scant 25-point lead over Steve David and J.W. Myers heading into the final heat on Lake Washington and as a result, got first choice for his lane. The wily veteran took lane one, beat the field through the first turn and was never threatened in winning his second straight and record 10th victory at Seattle and 59th of his career.
"We got lucky. The crew did a great job getting the boat ready," said Villwock, who passed Bill Muncey for wins on the 2-mile race course. "Steve David gave us all he could and he probably blew up a motor trying to catch us.
"It wasn't easy," Villwock said. "Steve had me pinned in there pretty good for about a lap and a half. It wasn't fun, but he must have hit a wave at the wrong time, and I was able to get ahead of him. It was bumpy, and we were all over the place. That's what makes Seafair special. It's just so difficult."
David, driving the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison, had lane two and valiantly tried to stay with the bright-orange Elam. But the Oberto fell off the pace quickly and ran into trouble on the fourth lap.
The Oberto hit a rolling wave in the turn and went airborne, but David was able to keep the boat from going over. However, the impact damaged the boat's engine and slowed considerably,
"I got super light in the north turn and went up in lane 2 and came down in lane 6," David said. "When I got back into it, it started stalling real bad. I just had to baby it back in. If we would have kept running we would have destroyed everything. If I hadn't got light it might have been interesting."
David was able to coax the Oberto across the line for a sixth-place finish in the seven-boat final heat.
"That was all it had left on the last lap," said David. "I couldn't use all the throttle and I was just trying to finish."
Jimmy King, driving the often unreliable U-3 Grandview on the Lake, had arguably the best run in the final placing second from lane four. King, who won a preliminary heat earlier in the day, reeled in Myers and the U-37 Hoss Mortgage Investors, then passed David for second place. He was still gaining on Villwock when the checkered flag was dropped.
"When (the piston engine) is on, we can go up against anybody on the dock," said a jubilant King. "We've never had much luck as a team here and to come in second is great for us."
Myers finished third after subbing for regular driver Jean Theoret after Saturday's first round heat. Jeff Bernard and the U-5 Formulaboats.com was fourth, Kip Brown and the U-17 USNW Express was fifth and J. Michael Kelly was seventh in the U-7 Graham Trucking from the trailer position.
Villwock was the top qualifer for the event and won his first and third heats before settling for third in Heat 2A after getting stuck with lane three. David, Bernard, King and Myers also won preliminary heats.
The day was almost a mirror opposite of what happened the week before at Tri-Cities where David had an near perfect weekend while Villwock struggled mightily. David and the Oberto came out of that race with a 599-point lead in the national points race through three of six events, but that advantage had shrunk to 249 after Sunday.
"Last week, we messed up in every way you can mess up. Driving, on the shore, everywhere," said Villwock. "To come back and to win, that's what it's all about. This feels great."
The hydros take three weeks off before heading to Evansville on Aug. 22.
