| Kent Patriots place 7th in World meet
Courier Sports Staff
Junior Mandy Sweeney set a new school record in leading Kent Christian Academy's high school archery team to a seventh-place finish at the National Archery and School Program World Tournament at the Walt Disney Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. Saturday.
Sweeney shot a 283 to finish as the sixth-ranked high school female in the world. As a team, the Patriots shot a 3,126.
Several other Kent archers shot well enough to earn top 25 finishes in the high school division. Jacob Adcock fired a 273 to earn a No. 10 ranking, Joe Hancock had a 281 for 20th, Timea Demaree had a 273 for 21st ranking, and Seth Gabbard had a 279 for 25th.
You would think a coach would be ecstatic about such a finish. While he is pleased, coach Danny Gabbard went on to say that as a team their overall performance was not up to par.
"We had some of our better archers drop off the radar screen on that day giving up as many as 40 points," Gabbard said. "That hurts when it comes to team performance."
Gabbard pointed out that as a team they have to get their bottom four shooters shooting in the 255 range instead of the 230-244 range.
Kent also scored several individual top 10 finishes in various grade divisions. Sweeney's 283 was good enough for third in the ninth grade division while Timea Demaree's 273 placed eighth in that division. Adcock was fourth in the boys grade five division, Chloe Schulz was sixth in the girls grade five division, Hancock was eighth in the boys grade 10 division and Seth Gabbard was seventh in the boys grade 11 division.
"The World Tournament was a great experience for two reasons" Gabbard said. "First they saw that they can keep up with the big name schools and second, they saw what it is going to take to become world class champions."
The Patriots' regular season kicks off on Jan. 23 at home against Jennings County.
