Trailing 43-42 with 4:01 left in Friday night's boys basketball matchup with South Dearborn, Madison used an 11-0 run to vanquish the Knights 56-50 at Salm Gym and carry a perfect 4-0 record into tonight's conference showdown with Jeffersonville.
The Cubs' 11-0 run - fueled by defensive steals, offensive rebounds and free throws - came after South Dearborn had grabbed the 43-42 lead on a Joel Scudder 3-pointer and a Cameron Louden free throw.
Madison's Ross Hensler got the decisive rally started with two free throws at the 2:44 mark to give the Cubs a 44-43 lead. Hensler then stole the ball on the defensive end and scooted down the floor, missing a contested lay-up.
But Luke Jones managed to rebound the miss and put the ball back up and in. He was also fouled on the play, which ultimately gave the Cubs a 47-43 lead with 2:23 on the clock.
At the 1:42 mark, with Hensler on the line again, he made the first of a one-and-one opportunity. Missing the second, Jones again rebounded the ball and put it back up with a power move lay-up to make it 50-43.
Missing their own shots, the Knights were reduced to fouling down the stretch. Two free throws by Corey Povaleri and a free throw by Sean Hoevener finished the 11-0 run for the 53-43 lead with less than a minute to play.
Hoevener hit two free throws and Seth Pennington one more to end the Cubs' scoring. South Dearborn hit three shots at the end to close the gap to the final margin of victory.
"Our kids fought back," Madison coach Ryan Crick said of the fourth quarter brief surrender of the lead. "They showed a lot of character."
South Dearborn (0-5) started the game strong, ending the first quarter with a 15-12 lead. Madison responded in the second, however, outscoring the Knights 11-2 to retake the lead, 23-17 at the half.
The Knights got hot from the outside in the third quarter, hitting four 3-pointers, three of them by junior Kraig Jefferson. The Cubs, however, took advantage of defensive miscues by the Knights, scoring six of their seven baskets during the period on lay-ups.
Three-pointers by Jefferson and Cameron Louden ended the scoring in the third quarter, leaving the Cubs with a one-point advantage, 38-37, heading into the final period.
Crick made an important change in the fourth quarter, scrapping his match-up zone for a man-to-man defense.
"(Jefferson) and (Scudder) are lights out, so we had to contain them" Crick said.
The 3-pointers in the third quarter came after skip passes over a drawn-in zone defense, so Craig decided he needed to apply more pressure to each of the Knights' shooters.
Scudder did manage a three with 4:46 remaining to tie the game at 42-42, but after South Dearborn's Louden gave the Knights their brief lead at 43-42, the Cubs went on their spree, keeping the Knights scoreless over the next three-and-a-half minutes, by which time the game was no longer in doubt.
The Knights managed to control the boards, outrebounding the Cubs 25-20. But turnovers killed the visitors, as they lost the ball 17 times to only five for Madison.
South Dearborn hit seven 3-pointers, but they took 25 three-point shots for 28 percent shooting. The Cubs hit three of nine three-point attempts for a 33 percent mark.
Knights head basketball coach Toby Carrigan, a Hanover alum who played and coached with the Panthers before moving to Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., as an assistant coach, is still looking for his initial win in his first year of coaching the Knights.
"We're getting better," he said after the game. "Tonight we made some shots, but we didn't make some of those shots at the end. You got to give (Madison) a lot of credit, though - they play defense."
In its fourth quarter clamp-down on the Knights' shooters, Crick particularly credited Hoevener for locking up Scudder.
"Sean did a pretty decent job of making (Scudder, who is left-handed) go to his right," Crick said.
Crick also highlighted Donnie Malcomb play on defense which led to three offensive charges being called on the Knights. On offense, Crick said he just wanted to spread the wealth to each of his players. Six different Cubs had an assist during the game, with Povaleri leading the team with four.
Next up for Madison will be a visit to Jeffersonville tonight, while South Dearborn will seek its first win at Franklin County tonight.
