Cubs pound Batesville 23-2

Madison erupted in the third and fourth innings as the Cubs softball team took a decisive 23-2 win over Batesville to cap a doubleheader sweep on Friday night at home.

The Cubs led 1-0 after the first inning and made it 3-0 after two more runs in the bottom of the second.

Madison's offense continued to head in the right direction in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs before Batesville scored its first two in the top of the fourth and trailed 9-2. The Cubs responded in a big way in the top of the fourth by batting around the lineup and scoring 14 runs for the final 23-2 margin.

"We were more focused," Madison coach Tony Ralston said. "We started hitting the ball a lot harder and was aggressive on the bases. The fourth inning we broke the game wide open. All in all it was a good night for us and we had really good pitching and defense."

Annelise Hackney led Madison's 15-hit attack, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

LeAnn Fox, Bri Tingle, Brooklyn Smith and Sarah Johann had two hits each while Bree Barnes, Alexis Wolf and Jennie Wilson each had a hit. Barnes added team-highs in runs with four and RBIs with three.

Tingle and Wolf also added three RBIs.

Wolf threw a complete game and picked up the win. The Madison starter gave up two runs - one earned - on just three hits in five innings of work. She walked two and struck out four.

Despite struggling throughout, Madison won 7-2 in game one.

Smith and Johann each had two hits to lead Madison's 10-hit attack. Barnes, Fox, Tingle, Wolf, Kaitlin Rice and Wilson had one hit each. Wilson also had a team-high two RBIs.

Fox started in the circle and picked up the game one win after throwing seven complete innings. She gave up two unearned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out five.
