Rebels’ run into Grinch

NEW CASTLE — For the Southwestern Lady Rebels, this was definitely not how they wanted to spend their Christmas vacation.

The Rebels, ranked second in Class 2A, finished off an 0-for-2 Friday, falling to Terre Haute South 62-48 in the consolation round of the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle. That loss came on the heels on a 72-60 loss to Shenandoah in the semifinals.

While the Rebels (9-4) had their moments in Friday night’s consolation, a 20-7 South fourth quarter run ended any hopes of a Southwestern win.

“That’s the way it has been all week, hot, cold, hot, cold. We were flat both ballgames,” said Southwestern head coach Donna Cheatham. “If I knew what it was, I would write a book.”

The Rebels allowed Terre Haute South to take control of the game early and thanks to a 6-for-22 shooting performance through the first two quarters, Southwestern could put up little fight.

What fight the Rebels could mount emerged in the third quarter when the patented Southwestern press forced turnovers and over a span of three minutes on the game clock, an 11-point deficit turned into a two-point lead.

But like the rest of the tournament, Southwestern failed to sustain the momentum. Bad passes, poor shots and costly turnovers played havoc with the Rebels’ game plans.

Trailing just 42-41 after three quarters, South erupted in the fourth to put the game away.

“We just self-destructed,” said Cheatham, shaking her head. “We went from eight points down to two up and if that doesn’t fire you up, nothing will. I don’t know if it was exams, the Christmas holiday, the loss to Floyd Central (last week), but we’ve just been flat.”

Even the normally steady Catherine Graham had one of the worst games in her illustrious career. Graham followed up a 27-point performance against Shenandoah in the morning semifinals by hitting just 4-of-21 shots from the floor — an ice cold 1-for-10 from behind the 3-point arc — but still led all scorers with 18 points thanks to 9-of-13 from the free throw line.

Fellow senior Autumn Walker added 15 points for the Rebels, but was just 4-of-16 from the floor.

But the poor-shooting bug wasn’t limited to just the Rebels’ two marquee players. As a team, Southwestern connected on just 12-of-49 shots from the floor (24.5 percent) and were a horrid 3-for-18 from 3-point range.

By contrast, South took four more shots and hit 16 more for 53 percent (28-for-53) from the floor. Lauren Ditteon led the Braves (7-7) with 17 points while Alison Terrell scored 15, Laura Engle 11 and Mallory Kraly 10.

Looking for bright spots, Cheatham pointed to the play of her 6-foot-1 freshman center Kayla Hay, who scored 12 points in the semifinals and nearly outscored the Raiders’ twin towers of Teran Warner and Amanda Norris combined.

“I thought Kayla outplayed their two big girls,” Cheatham said. “She still has a long way to go, but she’s just a freshman. And she was like the rest of this team today, hot, cold, hot, cold.”

The Rebels will take the remainder of the Christmas break off, before visiting always though New Albany Jan. 7. Despite the three-game losing streak — the longest for Southwestern since the 1999-2000 season — Cheatham is not giving up hope.

“We’ve got a little while to prepare and we’ll try to regroup,” she said. “We have great kids who don’t like to lose. We’ll get back at it and find out what we have to do.”
