N. Carol Wheate Baker, 81, of Madison, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
She was born Sept. 29, 1931, in Kent, the daughter of Maurice and Zella Elsie Berry Wheate. She was raised in Jefferson County and was a 1949 graduate of Saluda High School, where she was valedictorian. She was employed for two years in Louisville, Ky., with Commonwealth Life Insurance as a clerk and personal assistant. She worked for four years with the Richard Johnson Insurance Agency in Madison, serving as a personal assistant to Richard Johnson and John Cade. She and her family resided for a year and a half in Clearwater, Fla., before returning to Jefferson County. She worked for Bob Webster and Bill Deveary at the Broadway Service Station in downtown Madison for several years. She later worked with the Jefferson Proving Ground as a secretary, retiring in 1979. After her retirement she began serving as a caregiver to many members of her family. She was an active member of the Madison Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she held several offices. She was also a member of the Saluda High School Alumni Association. She enjoyed music and playing by ear. She played the harmonica, piano and guitar, and loved singing. She also enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking, canning, gardening and flowers. She typed a book for Daurice Bowyer, who had it published. She was a volunteer with the Salvation Army, The Lord's Kitchen and the Hungry Hearts Mission at the Madison Assembly of God Church. She also enjoyed helping with the Eden's Way Vegetarian Cooking Seminars.
She is survived by one son, Steven D. Baker of Madison; two daughters, Marcia J. Baker of Madison and Gail L. Smith of Shelbyville; one sister, Leanna L. Shelley of Madison; her caregivers, Patricia and Clarence Bearn of Madison; one granddaughter; two step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey E. Baker, whom she married Jan. 14, 1951, and who died July 26, 2002; her parents; three sisters, Louise Wheate, Helen Stucker and Mary H. "Jean" Turman; two brothers, William David "Billy" Wheate and Marshall Wheate; one grandson; one great-grandson; one nephew; one niece; one great-nephew; and several great-nieces.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery near Chelsea.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from noon until the service.

Jacqueline "Jacqui" Higgins, 27, of North Vernon, formerly of Madison, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at St. Vincent Jennings Community Hospital in North Vernon.
