By: Peggy Vlerebome Courier Staff Writer
A national authority on old bridges will be among the speakers Saturday, Nov. 8, at the second annual Jefferson Proving Ground heritage seminar.
The all-day seminar will be in the auditorium at the Madison-Jefferson County Library, 420 W. Main St. Registration before Nov. 7 costs $20, while registering the day of the seminar will cost $25. Students can register for $15. Lunch is included in the cost.
James L. “Jim” Cooper, a retired DePauw University history professor and author of two books on bridges, will talk about “The Wonderful Stone Arch Bridges.” Four stone arch bridges at JPG are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Joe Robb, manager of the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, which occupies most of the northern part of the former munitions proving ground, will talk abut “The Vision for the Future.”
Mike Moore, who worked at JPG and is the proving ground’s unofficial historian, will tell the military story of Jefferson Proving Ground, while George Bayless, whose family lived on land taken by the Army for the base, will share recollections of Oakdale School. The school also is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The JPG Heritage Partnership and Historic Hoosier Hills Resource, Conservation and Development are sponsoring the seminar. Members of the partnership are people who worked at JPG or whose families lived on the land, and people interested in documenting and preserving the history of the area. Historic Hoosier Hills, based in Versailles, is a partner of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service and serves as an umbrella organization for organizations like the JPG Partnership.
For registration information, call Ken Knouf at JPG, (812) 273-6075 or Historic Hoosier Hills, (812)689-6410, extension 5.
