The Jefferson County Democratic headquarters fell to a hush as the final vote count announced Republican Bob Courtney’s 796-vote victory over Democratic candidate Julie Berry.

Berry appeared emotional throughout the night after each precinct result showed her and other Democratic candidates falling behind. A crowd of about 100 that included fellow candidates, family, friends and supporters munched pizza and brownies as they watched the results flash on a projector.

City council at-large candidate Dan Dattilo was the lone Democratic victor in a Republican rout of city offices. He spoke to the crowd after the results were final.

“I just want to thank you guys for voting — being a part of this process. I want everyone to know how hard that Julie worked, Julie worked harder than any candidate out here,” Dattilo said to a thunderous round of applause.

Berry spoke to the Courier after embraces with friends, supporters and family.

“I’d like to thank all who supported our campaign for Madison’s mayor,” Berry said. “We fell short of our goal tonight, but brought up many important issues during this race. Issues like homelessness and substance abuse, our suicide problem and some of the challenges that are facing Madison. I think we did that honestly and openly. I’d like to thank my family, particularly my husband, Pat, Mary Kate Butler, all my committee members, my siblings and nieces and nephews and a host of friends and supporters. I congratulate Bob Courtney and he has my best wishes for a successful administration.”

After the final results, Berry sent a text message to Courtney.

“Bob, congratulations on your win. I wish you well, and have every expectation you will do a great job. Well done. Julie”
