A former teacher and principal in Jefferson County has been invited to give the daily invocation before the U.S. House of Representatives later this year at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The Rev. Aubrey Bessenger, a former teacher at the Lydia Middleton and Dupont schools in Jefferson County and principal for 13 years at Dupont, will give the prayer on Sept. 30, after being invited by Congressman Greg Pence recently.

Bessenger, who was also pastor at Lancaster Baptist Church for 16 years, lives in Hayden and is chaplain of the Jennings County Republican Party.

He gives the prayer annually at the county’s Lincoln Day Dinner and has previously given the invocation at the Indiana State Legislature.

It was at a Lincoln Day dinner that Pence saw Bessenger, now 85, in action, leading to the Congressional invitation.
