The Friendship State Bank is now accepting applications for a two-decades long scholarship program that will award $1,000 college scholarships to nine local high school seniors.

Seniors from Batesville, Jac-Cen-Del, Rising Sun, Milan, South Dearborn, South Ripley, Switzerland County, Madison and Lawrenceburg are eligible to apply for the scholarship.

This scholarship was created more than 25 years ago to honor the legacy of Wilke S. Lemon and James W. Lemon, who helped build Friendship State Bank into the company it is today. Wilke Lemon was the first cashier and manager who managed the bank after being chosen by a group of local businessmen and farmers who founded the bank in 1912. After Wilke Lemon died in 1957, his son, James, followed in his father’s footsteps and continued to manage the bank.

Qualified applicants must possess a 2.5 or better cumulative GPA; plan to attend an accredited college, university or technical school; and must complete the scholarship application. Appliants must write a 250-word or less essay describing a community activity that made the biggest impact personally or on their community and why.

The deadline to apply is April 5, 2019. The address to mail applications is The Friendship State Bank, Attn: Heather Davies, P.O. Box 357, Friendship, Indiana 47021.

For more information, email Heather Davies at or call (812) 667-5101. Applications can be downloaded from the bank’s website at
