Switzerland County residents are gearing up for two events this weekend - a car show and community-wide yard sale.

The 2013 "On the River Car Show" kicks off Friday with a cruise-in, parade and music beginning at 6 p.m. The event continues Saturday with the car show, awards and giveaways.

Organizer Mike Bear expects the parade to begin around 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Paul Ogle Riverfront Park before traveling up Ferry Street to Main Street. The parade will travel about a mile west of Vevay, then make its way about a mile east of Vevay before returning to the riverfront park.

The Slick River Rockets band from Madison is expected to play throughout the event on Friday, and several prizes will be given away.

Bear expects the riverfront park to fill with hundreds of cars and trucks. Over 300 cars entered the show last year, and he expects around 350 or 400 entries this year.

"The weather's supposed to be great," Bear said of the weekend event.

In addition to the cars and trucks, tractors and semis will be displayed at the Paul Ogle Riverfront Park as part of the show this year.

Registration for the show will take place from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There is a $20 registration fee with all proceeds from the show going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Admission is free for visitors.

The first 200 cars to register will also receive a dash plaque for participating in the car show.

Over 150 trophies - including the Bicentennial Trophy commemorating Vevay's 200th anniversary - will be awarded at the end of the show around 4:30 p.m. Other trophies will be awarded for the Best of Show, best model trophies, Best Truck, Best Bike, Best Street Rod, Best Antique, Best Paint and more.

Seaplane rides and auto-related vendors will be at the car show on Saturday. Food and drinks from Jeff-Craig Fire Department and the Kiwanis, plus oldies from TC Fairline and Rockin' Renee will be available throughout the day too.

The annual Switzerland County community-wide yard sale also will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A map of participating residential and business locations will be available at the Switzerland County Visitors Center at 128 W. Main St. in Vevay. The center will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday and public restrooms will be available.

Switzerland County Tourism Executive Director Kendal Miller said nearly 30 people have already signed up to be part of the map, and she expects even more people to set up sales.

Yard sale participants plan to set up around the Courthouse square and up and down Main Street. The community-wide yard sales usually take place in the downtown area with a few other sales on the outskirts of town and down side streets.

"It's not just on the main streets," Miller said.
