A local band of high schoolers will be competing in New Albany Production House's battle of the bands Friday night.

The Weekend Classic, a pop-punk band, is participating in the five-week event and hopes to advance to the finals, where they could win a cash prize and a recording contract with New Albany Production House.

Chris Richards, drummer for The Weekend Classic, said he and the members are hoping to start a career out of making music.

"It would be great to keep playing together. Keep up the rock star dream," Richards said. "We'd love to make it on a label and actually get somewhere with it. Make it a career."

The band has been playing together for at least three years and the members have performed together several times, including at the Regatta parade.

"We've played quite a few shows," Richards said.

Richards said that friends and family members signed the band up for the battle of the bands.

The other members of the band are Nick Nolan, Chris Webster and Brandon Boldery.

Richards said they have been practicing and developing a setlist for the performance.

The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The final round is scheduled for May 3.
