A fire at a farm on State Road 62 destroyed a pole barn and the contents inside the structure Monday night.

Fire crews responded to reports of a fire in the 4700 block of North State Road 62 around 8 p.m.

Madison Township Fire Chief Robert Black said Chris Lee, a member of the Canaan Fire Department, was driving on State Road 62 when he saw flames coming from a pole barn behind a home and called dispatch to report the blaze.

The barn, which stored several large bales of hay and trailers, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Crews from the Madison Township, Ryker's Ridge and Canaan fire departments battled the fire for two hours before turning the scene over to Ryker's Ridge crews for fire watch for about another two hours.

The barn was destroyed, Black said, but fire crews were able to save a workshop that was attached to the barn from major damage.

According to Jefferson County GIS records, the property is owned by Mark and Marjorie Goley.
