Three Indiana State Parks in the area will host "First Day Hike" events just hours after ringing in the new year Thursday.

Clifty Falls State Park activities begin at 10 a.m.

Visitors should meet in the Clifty Inn lobby for a 90-minute, moderately rugged hike.

Hikers will return to the inn following the walk for a bonfire, s'mores and hot chocolate or coffee, Clifty Falls State Park Interpretive Naturalist Kristie Ridgway said.

Hardy Lake State Park's hike will begin at 11 a.m.

Officials ask participants to meet at the main trailhead across from the beach access road for a hike to "The Island."

The hike is expected to be about three miles and is considered to be moderately rugged, a Indiana State Parks release said.

Versailles State Park officials will host a hike in the afternoon.

Participants should meet at the pool parking lot in front of the mountain bike trailhead at 1:45 p.m.

Park staff will lead visitors on the Shadow Run trail through forests and cedar groves. The hike is about four miles and could take up to two hours.

Sturdy hiking boots and water are recommended during any of the events.

Additional activities for other Indiana State Parks may be found online at www.in.gov/dnr/parklake under the 2015 First Day Hikes tab.
