Madison Police arrested a couple Monday at the Best Way Inn on Clifty Drive while conducting a welfare check after staff reported guests not responding at the door.

Officers Chad Wehner and Sgt. William Watterson knocked for several minutes before one of the guests in the room answered, a news release said. The man who answered the door was Michael R. Young, 55. The officers learned there was an arrest warrant out of Jennings County for Young.

Beverly J. Birchfield, 41, was also in the room. She was also wanted on a warrant out of Jennings County.

Young and Birchfield were taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

In addition to their existing warrants, both face charges in Jefferson County of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia and possession of syringes, which were found in a search of the hotel room. Some of the items were in plain view, the news release said, and the suspects gave consent for the officers to conduct a search. Both were still in custody in Jefferson County Tuesday afternoon.
