A 30-year-old man, John Douglas Birch, was killed Saturday morning when his vehicle hit a tree on State Road 56 near the south entrance to Clifty Falls State Park.

A news release from Chief Deputy Josh Taylor of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said officers went to the scene near the intersection of Canyon Road about 7:45 a.m. Their initial investigation concluded Birch’s vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. He was dead at the scene. S.R. 56 was closed to traffic for three hours as officers investigated the crash.

Arrangements for Birch, of Vevay, Indiana, will be announced by the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison.
