The City of Madison presented this year's Jon Menke Award for Military Service, named after the young Madisonian who died at age 22 on Aug. 4, 2008, in East Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated under his truck, Tuesday night. This year’s recipients are World War II veterans Don and Mary Bullock. Don, who died in 2018 at age 92, enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 and served aboard the USS Wadsworth Fletcher Class Destroyer throughout the Pacific Theater. Mary Bullock, now 98, enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps in February 1945 and served two years as a medical technical.
