The city is seeking candidates to fill two seats on the Historic Board. The deadline to submit a letter of interest and a resume is Thursday.

One seat is available immediately, and the appointee will serve until Dec. 31, 2013. The appointment will be to fill the remaining term of the late Virginia "Ginger" Dyer Jorgensen.

The second opening will be in January, when member Paul Davis leaves the board after serving the allowed two consecutive three-year terms.

A member can serve two consecutive full terms, so the appointee to the unexpired term could serve until the end of next year, then continue serving for two full terms. A member who serves two consecutive terms can later be appointed to a new term.

Letters of interest and resumes should be submitted to city preservation planner Camille Fife at City Hall, 101 W. Main St., Madison, IN 47250, or by email to Anyone with questions can call Fife at 274-2750.

Appointments to the board are made by the mayor, with confirmation by the City Council.

The Historic Board meets the fourth Monday of each month.

Madison was designated a Certified Local Government by the Indiana State Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service in the U.S. Department of the Interior in October 2011.

"This designation mandates that board members continue to educate themselves regarding preservation issues and policies through attendance at workshops, seminars and conferences," Fife said in an announcement of the openings.

The Certified Local Government agreement "encourages the city to find candidates who meet professional qualifications in the fields of history, architectural history, archaeology, architecture, historical architecture and/or related fields," the announcement said.

"An advanced degree and/or training in preservation is a plus. (Certified) communities are required to go to extra efforts to find commission members who meet these qualifications. Because of this, preference will be given to those who have a degree in historic preservation, history, architecture or a related field or other similar experience."
