One design has been chosen from more than 40 entries to honor area veterans with public recognition in form of a banner.

The Jefferson County Veteran’s Banner Project Committee chose a design submitted by Sarah Prasil, who serves as VisitMadison Inc.’s marketing and advertising director. The chosen design was revealed Saturday during the city’s Veterans Day Program.

The first banner to be displayed will honor U.S. Army Major Samuel Woodfill, one of the most decorated World War I veterans. Woodfill, who was from Jefferson County, received the Medal of Honor for his service and has been inducted into the Indiana Military Veterans Hall of Fame.

The banner will be installed during a ceremony May 19, 2018. Several other banners honoring local veterans will be displayed on various utility poles throughout the community and along the riverfront from Armed Forces Day until Veterans Day in November.

More information about sales and sponsorship of veteran banners will be released at a later date.
