The Indiana Department of Transportation Thursday afternoon reported on its Facebook page that “a police pursuit ending in a fatal crash” had occurred at S.R. 256 and Thompson Rd. west of Kent.

Multiple first responder units, incuding Indiana State Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Hanover Police Department, were at the scene a little after 4 p.m. A helicopter from King’s Daughters’ Hospital was seen airlifting an individual from the area.

A blue sedan had hit an electric pole at the intersection, but no information was available on how many people were in the vehicle, the extent of injuries or details of the crash.

At the same time, Duke Energy reported an outage in the Kent area that started at 4:16 p.m. on the company’s outage map. The map showed 679 customers without power at 6:07 p.m., but that number had dropped to 240 as of 7 p.m.

The transportation department said the road is closed and drivers are encouraged to seek an alternate route.
