Madison firefighters and police responded to a report of smoke in the hallway of an apartment complex in the 500 block of East Second Street at 3:50 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, firefighters reported smoke throughout the structure and the roof area. The fire damage was contained to a common stairway area of the building at 507 E. Second St. in the Carl’s Landing Apartment complex. All occupants were able to exit the structure safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Madison Fire Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshall’s Office. Responding agencies included the Madison Fire and Police Departments and the King’s Daughters’ Hospital EMS.
