Local groups prepared for summer events by requesting street closures during Monday’s Board of Public Works and Safety meeting.

Kentuckiana Hope for Heroes will host the “We Remember” candlelight vigil May 28. Organizers  requested the east and west lanes of Broadway between Main and Third streets be closed from 8 to 9:30 p.m. 

Madison Regatta officials asked for a few streets near the riverfront be closed for the festival weekend with closures from June 25 through July 3. Officials requested Vaughn Drive between Jefferson and Mulberry streets be closed on June 25 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. 

Officials asked that Vaughn Drive from Jefferson to West streets and Jefferson, Mulberry and West streets between First Street and Vaughn Drive be closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 26 to move equipment needed for the race weekend to the river. The request included the closure of Vaughn Drive from the west side of the entrance to the Riverboat Inn to the west side of Plum Street, as well as all streets running north and south between the southern side of First Street between St. Michael’s Avenue and Vernon Street be closed from 8 a.m. on June 27 through 5 a.m. on July 3.

Officials also asked for the city parking lot at Second and Jefferson streets be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 30, July 1 and July 2. 

Board members unanimously approved both requests by a vote of 3-0.

The Jefferson County Veterans’ Council also requested a street closure for a dedication of a new memorial to be installed at the Jefferson County Courthouse. The dedication will be held July 4, and the council requested the closure of Main Street from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the day of the event.

Board members unanimously approved the request by a vote of 3-0, but the approval of the request is contingent upon the Indiana Department of Transportation’s approval of the closure.
