Warming hands

Visit Madison Inc. is establishing a “Mittens & Marshmallows” drive to collect gloves and mittens to be given away free to children over the two-day Wonderland in the Park holiday event at Bicentennial Park Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14. The plan is to place a donation collection box where local residents can drop off new mittens and gloves to be passed out to children at Wonderland. Any surplus mittens and gloves will be donated to the Salvation Army for its use. Details will be announced soon on the location and date when the collection box will be in place.

Don’t forget state hospital

As Christmas approaches, the staff at Madison State Hospital is asking the community to remember the patients at the hospital in holiday plans. Madison State Hospital provides a number of greatly needed services to adults struggling with the most severe of mental health challenges in this community and across Indiana. Its work has a powerful impact on the people it works with directly and on the larger community as a whole. If you would like to make a donation, write your check or money order to: MSH Patient Christmas Fund, 711 Green Road, Madison 47250. Your gift will be placed in the Patient Christmas Recreation Fund to benefit all patients there at Christmas.

Shopping with police, firefighters

Jefferson County firefighters and law enforcement agencies are taking applications for their annual shopping trip with area families and children.

The Christmas with a Cop and Shop with a Firefighter programs make the applications available in November.

The deadline for families to return applications this year is Dec. 6.

The annual shopping trips focus on making sure children in need receive necessary clothing items — and more if there is money to spare.

The law enforcement officers — Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Madison Police and Hanover Police — are sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28 in Madison and partner with the Veterans of the Foreign Wars Post 1969 to raise money through a Poker Run in September. Donations are taken year-round at all of the law enforcement offices for the Christmas with a Cop program. Applications also are available at the law enforcement offices.

Shop with a Firefighter applications are available at Madison Consolidated, Prince of Peace and Southwestern schools; area fire stations; the County Commissioners’ office; the county libraries; German American, Farmers and First Financial banks; QOHVAC; OVO Head Start; Boys and Girls Club and Girls Inc. Anyone wishing to donate to Shop with a Firefighter should call the City of Madison Fire Department at 812-265-8350.
