Laura Hesse, a graduate of Shawe Memorial High School, has received a National Merit Scholarship to attend Michigan State University, where she plans to major in chemistry.

Hesse, the daughter of Lisa and Steve Hesse, was one of 36 students in Indiana to receive the honor from the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. released the list of 2013 scholarship award winners last week.

"Today, National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced approximately 1,800 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join approximately 2,500 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in late May," the release said.

Hesse said the application process included writing an essay describing leadership positions and contributions to school and community activities, showing an outstanding academic record and being endorsed by a high school official.

Officials from each sponsoring college select their scholarship winners from a list of finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The scholarships provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate class at the institution.
