The late Dan Hoffman’s nieces Hanna Hoffman, left, and Sarah Hoffman along with their mother, Kristine Hoffman and Dan Hoffman’s son, Ryan, look at a plaque on a bench outside City Hall that was dedicated to the memory of the former council member Wednesday evening. “Dan would be really happy” about the bench with his name on it, said Bob Courtney, Hoffman’s best friend. “I can see him sitting there talking with his friends, helping people.”

Hoffman had been the District 1 City Council representative since 2015 and a Department of Child Services caseworker. A native of Madison, Hoffman, 48, committed suicide July 18. Hoffman’s co-workers suggested the memorial, Mayor Damon Welch said.

The group dedicating the bench also included Dan Hoffman’s older sister, Teresa Hoffman Campbell of Seymour, Tennessee. “We miss him,” Campbell said softly when Welch asked if she wanted to speak at the dedication. (Courier photos by Connor Jacobs)
