A third Jefferson County resident has died as a result of COVID-19, the Jefferson County Health Department announced in a release Friday afternoon.

The individual was an adult who died at home.

“The health department would like to stress that this disease is still prevalent. Positive cases are being reported daily, and this death should serve as a grim reminder of the severity of the disease,” the health department stated.

“We cannot stress enough the importance and effectiveness of wearing masks, maintaining social distance, hand hygiene and general disinfection. We want our community to have the best possible chance to prevent another tragedy like this one from happening,” the release said.

The county had a positive case count of 201 Friday around noon and a 4.7% overall positivity rate out of over 4,000 tested. The positivity rate has been 15% since Aug. 14, according to the Indiana State Department of Health COVID-19 dashboard.
