Employees at the Kentucky Utilities' Ghent generating station recently received the Kentucky Governor's Health and Safety Award for outstanding safety performance.

The Ghent generating station won the award for working more than 1.2 million hours without any lost-time injuries. The plant has since hit 1.4 million hours without an injury, a Kentucky Utilities release said.

The last lost-time injury for the plant was in December 2009.

The safety performance is an outstanding achievement when considering the hazards with planned and unplanned-outage work on the generating units, the extreme demands of summer generation and major construction at the facilities, the release said.

"Our employees are very committed to working safely one day at a time and going home uninjured," Ricky Moore, Ghent's health and safety specialist, said in the release. "In addition, our front-line supervisors do an excellent job preparing employees for work each day by performing good pre-job briefings, setting the right example and checking on their crews."

Ghent plant representatives received the award at the Governor's Health and Safety Conference in Louisville.
