Madison Mayor Bob Courtney released a statement around 4:30 p.m. Friday about a fatal crash on S.R. 256 Thursday afternoon, which killed two and seriously injured another following a police chase:

“Today our community is faced with heartache as we mourn the lives lost in yesterday’s tragic event. When police pursuits end in tragedy our officers, first responders, and entire community are significantly impacted. We are grateful to all of those who did their best to prevent this tragedy from happening while keeping our community safe. We value the partnerships with the Indiana State Police, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Hanover Police Department, Madison Fire Department, Hanover Fire Department, and King’s Daughters’ Hospital EMS who were all on scene. We want to thank them for their efforts yesterday afternoon and give our support to them during this time. More importantly, we want to share our deepest condolences with all individuals affected by this tragedy, especially the families who lost loved ones. We ask that the public respect the privacy of the families affected and allow them time to grieve. The City of Madison is continuing to work in partnership with all agencies involved and the Madison Police Department is working closely with the Indiana State Police on their investigation.”
