Members of the Milton Fire & Rescue received an achievement award for its fire prevention accomplishments in 2013.

The fire department recently received a Life Safety Achievement Award from the National Association of State Fire Marshals Fire Research and Education Foundation in partnership with Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company.

Milton Fire & Rescue was one of 143 departments across the United States to receive the award this year, a release said.

The Life Safety Achievement Award has been awarded to departments since 1994 for local fire prevention efforts that have helped to reduce the number of lives lost in residential fires, the release said. Award recipients documented the fire prevention programs and showed commitment to reducing the number of house fires in their community.

"The heroic efforts of our local fire service aren't limited to rushing into burning buildings to save families. They also present educational information to local schools and other community groups to make sure people know how to respond to fires and how to prevent them in the first place," said Alan Clark, assistant vice president of special investigations for Grinnell Mutual, in a release.

"Milton Fire & Rescue strives to maintain an excellent fire prevention program and do yearly programs for the schools and library, as well as other programs at the fire stations," Milton Fire Chief Jason Long said in the release. "We are thankful for this award, and (it) just shows the hard work each member puts into the department to make it great."
