Southwestern High School and Madison’s Moose Lodge will both host Red Cross blood drives in December as part of 10 upcoming donation opportunities through Dec. 12 in Southern Indiana.

The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to be the lifeline for patients in need this holiday season by making an appointment to give blood or platelets. While helping to save lives is likely motivation enough, those who donate through Dec. 18 will also receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email, courtesy of Suburban Propane.

Additionally, those who give blood through Nov. 30 will receive an exclusive long-sleeved T-shirt, while supplies last.

The Madison Moose Lodge No. 765, 1340 Michigan Road, will host a blood donor drive from noon to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5 and Southwestern High School, 167 South Main Cross, Hanover, will host from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Laura Cash Boldery Activities Center.

As schedules grow busy with holiday parties, shopping and fun with friends and family, many blood and platelet donors delay giving. Unfortunately, that may lead to delays in treatments for patients who rely on blood. Right now, there is a critical need for type O blood donors.

Donating blood is quick and easy and finding a location to donate is also convenient. Donors can search for locations by ZIP code as well as make an appointment to donate using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by going online at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

The entire donation process takes about an hour, but donors can save about 15 minutes by completing RapidPass® — a pre-donation reading and completion of health history questions — prior to arriving for their appointment.

Those who donate get important health information including a mini-health screening to help determine eligibility that includes blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin readings. First-time donors will also find out their blood type soon after donating.

The Red Cross blood drive will also visit Corydon, Lanesville and both Seymour and North Vernon twice prior to Dec. 12.

For more information about the drive at Southwestern, call Stephanie Nussbaum at 812-866-1108 or Mickey Waller at 812-866-1199 to schedule a donation time.
