Southwestern Jefferson County Consolidated Schools returned to classrooms this morning after the holiday break. Students boarded buses and entered their buildings before daylight. Mary K. Owens of Hanover (below) wore her new battery-powered neon vest and continued to help students across South Main Cross Street as she has since the late 1990s. Indiana’s Legislature, which convened this week, will be taking up issues of school safety after concerns raised by recent accidents involving schoolchildren boarding and riding buses and crossing streets, accidents that resulted in the deaths of children.
