More than 1,800 people lost power and the Jefferson County Central Dispatch phones were briefly down Friday afternoon after a squirrel got into a substation.

Lou Middleton with Duke Energy reported the outage started around 11:30 a.m. at the substation on Second Street. In all, 1,899 customers were without power.

Middleton said the power was restored to all customers around 1:10 p.m.

911 Director John Hendrix said the building's generator did not immediately kick on following the outage, leaving central dispatch with only radios.

As an emergency backup, 911 calls were rerouted to Jennings County for about an hour. Jennings County radioed each call to local dispatchers, who then radioed emergency crews. No emergency calls were dropped during the outage Hendrix said.
