Army Staff Sgt. Christopher T. Stout of Worthville, Ky., and two other soldiers died Tuesday in Kandahar City, Afghanistan, from wounds they received when insurgents attacked their unit with rifle, rocket-propelled grenade and small-arms fire.

The Department of Defense announced their deaths and the circumstances Friday. Stout's family members had confirmed his death Thursday.

Killed in addition to Stout, 34, were 1st Lt. Christopher S. Goeke, 23, of Minnesota and Staff Sgt. Sheldon L. Tate, 27, of Hinesville, Ga.

Stout and Goeke were assigned to 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Tate was assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.

They were among seven Fort Bragg soldiers killed in Afghanistan this week, the Defense Department announced Friday.

Stout lived in Fayetteville, N.C., with his wife and children.

He graduated from Carroll County High School and joined the Army when he was 18.

Funeral arrangements for Stout have not been announced.
