Vaughn Drive in Madison and High Street in Milton, near the Milton-Madison Bridge, reopened Thursday afternoon.

The two roads had been closed since bridge construction began in early 2011.

As they remove construction trailers and supply areas, Walsh Construction crews are restoring the Madison riverfront along Vaughn Drive and the Milton boat launch, which now includes a new dock.

Construction crews are still working on several other items, including truss painting, removal of temporary structures, and installing the pedestrian sidewalk and handrails on the west side of the bridge.

The historic slide of the Milton-Madison Bridge took place in April of this year, as the nearly half-mile-long truss was slid 55 feet from temporary piers onto permanent refurbished piers.

The bridge project - a joint effort between the Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet - has received numerous awards. It was named one of the top 10 bridge projects in the country by Roads & Bridges magazine, received a 2012 Best of What's New Award from Popular Science magazine and received several state and national engineering awards for innovation.
