George Fresh

George Robert "Bobby" Fresh, 88, of Hanover, died Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 24, 1924, in Madison, to George T. and Amne Moreland Fresh. He attended Saluda High School. He served in the Army from Aug. 16, 1944 to Dec. 6, 1946, rising to the rank of Private First Class serving in the Ren Company, 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and several other awards. He was a union contractor for more than 40 years, serving with the Laborers Union in Louisville, Ky. He began working in 1968 as the construction supervisor with the Kent Water Company and later served as the superintendent, until retiring in 1982. He then worked as a project manager with O'Brien Engineering for five years. He also enjoyed farming for many years. He was a member of the Jefferson County Farm Bureau, Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion, Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1969, the Murat Shrine, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and the New Prospect Baptist Church. He was also a past master of the Hanover Masonic Lodge 652 F. & A.M. He also served for many years on the Jefferson County Planning Commission, including serving as president of the board.

He is survived by one son, Ronald L. Fresh Sr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, Kenneth Fresh of Hanover; two grandsons; six great-grandchildren; 19 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgina R. "Ginny" Donnell Fresh, whom he married in 1948, and who died March 12, 2010; his parents; and one sister, Elizabeth Turner.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be in New Prospect Cemetery, near Saluda. Military honors will be conducted graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. A final salute will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.
