Mary Downing

Mary Louise Peelman Downing, 81, of Vevay, Indiana, died Friday, April 24, 2020, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay.

She was born Jan. 20, 1939, in Vevay, as one of 11 children to Frank Edward “E.P.” and Mary Naomi Fulton Peelman. She was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1957 graduate of Vevay High School. She was employed by US Shoe Factory in Vevay and the Steer Restaurant in Madison, Indiana for several years. She was also employed by the Madison State Hospital in Madison for several years, was a member of the Vevay Church of Christ in Vevay and enjoyed babysitting and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Coy, Peggy L. Scudder and Jacqueline Chatham, all of Vevay and Tammy S. Walton of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; her sons, Ray Otter of Versailles, Indiana and Micah Downing of Bloomington, Indiana; her stepdaughters, Linda Joy Furnish and LaDona Jean Scudder; her stepsons, Roy Downing Jr. and Ronald J. Downing; her brothers, Gordan Peelman of Lawrenceburg and Ronnie Peelman of Maysville, South Carolina; and 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Raymond Otter and her second husband, Roy Francis Downing; her sisters, Virginia Peelman, Betty Tomlison, Roberta Kearney, Linda Carol Peters and Shirley Ann Marsh; her brothers, Eugene, Robert “Bobby” and Charles “Chuck” Peelman and a niece.

Due to COVID-19 crowd restrictions, private funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2020, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Private family visitation is 10 a.m. Monday until time of services. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery there.
