Betty Marie Field Nay, 98, of Deputy, Indiana, died Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at her home.

She was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Toulon, Illinois, to Samuel Richard and Lillie Betty Moore Field. Her family lived in Toulon until 1930 when they moved to the Kent community. She was a 1938 graduate of Deputy High School. At 39, she enrolled in beauty school at the House of James and became a licensed beautician and cosmetologist. She started Betty’s Beauty Shop in Deputy and operated that business for 27 years until she retired in 1982. She was the oldest living member of Pisgah United Methodist Church and attended faithfully until her health declined recently. She was a member of the Deputy High School Alumni and attended for many years. She loved raising a large garden, her flower gardens and flowers boxes. She enjoyed preparing delicious meals for her family and was an accomplished baker. She was an avid sports fan, especially IU basketball and enjoyed watching golf and Little House on the Prarie. She was proud of her family, her family heritage, her family farm and the legacy she instilled in her family. She will be remembered for her hard work, generous and unassuming nature, her kindness, mild humor, grace, being community-minded, her faithfulness and her strong Christian convictions. She blessed her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren with love equally and knowingly and encouraged her children to get an education, be strong, hardworking, and succeed at whatever they set their minds to do.

She is survived by three sons, Richard E. “Dick” Nay of Deputy, James L. “Joe” Nay of Brown County, Indiana, Clifford D. “Duke” Nay of Salem, Indiana; a daughter, Donna S. Nay Godward of Deputy; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two great -great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Lee Stephanus of Lexington, Indiana; a brother, R. Dale Field of Greenwood, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Maurice “Bill” Nay; her daughter, Janet Ann Nay Kaitschuk and her sister, Anna Glenn Field Howell.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 8, 2019, at 2 p.m., at the Pisgah United Methodist Church on Deputy Pike near Deputy.

Interment will follow in the Pisgah Cemetery.

Friends may visit Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pisgah United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pisgah United Methodist Church.
