Harold Thomas

Harold Ernest “Ike” Thomas, 90, of Madison, Indiana and formerly of Versailles, Indiana, died Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.

He was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Cross Plains, Indiana, to Ernest William Fredrick and Edna Klusman Thomas. He was raised in Ripley County and was a 1948 graduate of Cross Plains High School where he played basketball. He was inducted into the U.S. Air Force in Indianapolis on Feb. 26, 1952, and rose to the rate of staff sergeant serving in the 3545th ABGRU ATC in camera repair and photography during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 25, 1956 at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He returned home to Ripley County and began a career as manager of Halcomb Home Center in Versailles from 1963 through 1998. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Olean, Indiana, and had served on the church council. He then worked from 1988 until he retired on Dec. 31, 1994 as manager at Greensburg Lumber in Greensburg, Indiana. He was very patriotic and a member of the Leora Weare-Versailles American Legion Post No. 173.

He was married in 1952 to Glendora Burman in Dewberry, Indiana, and they had two children. He was then married in 1970 to Betty Juanita Linkmeyer until her death on March 26, 1998 and they had a son. He was last married on Jan. 24, 1999 to Joy Klineline Brown and they settled in Madison and became members of Resurrection Lutheran Church and he served on the Church Council.

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Joy Klineline Brown of Madison; sons, Rick D. Thomas of Windermere, Florida and David A. Thomas of Versailles; a daughter, Sandra L. Zaccagnini of Orlando, Florida; his step daughters, Vickey Grace of West Port, Kentucky and Janie Werner of Milan, Indiana; his step sons, John Werner of Madison and Mike Werner of Vero Beach, Florida; a sister, Doris Droege of Olean; and seven grandchildren, two step grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 28 years, Betty Juanita Linkmeyer Thomas.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Madison. Interment will follow in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Olean. Friends may visit Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Leore Weare-Versailles American Legion Post No. 173.
