Wayne Carlton

Ray “Wayne” Carlton, 72, of East Enterprise, Indiana, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, at his home.

He was born July 6, 1946, in Madison.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vevay Cemetery in Vevay.

Bob Claghorn

Robert “Bob” Lee Claghorn, 81, of North Vernon, Indiana, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana.

He was born Sept. 26, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Nathan and Bertha Wyatt Claghorn. On August 19, 1955, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served for three years before being honorably discharged. He graduated cum laude from Hanover College with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He retired as a Rehab Counselor from Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation but had previously worked in social services at the Muscatatuck State Hospital. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Kentucky Colonels, the American Civil Liberties Union, Southern Poverty Law Center and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He loved bluegrass music, baseball, reading, classic literature and watching University of Kentucky basketball and football. He enjoyed coaching little league football, soccer and baseball in Madison and was simply about helping others.

He is survived by his wife, Nanette of North Vernon, whom he married Jan. 25, 1975; one daughter, Kara Claghorn of North Vernon; one brother, Larry Claghorn of Madison; five nieces; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Claghorn; his parents; one brother, Bernard Claghorn; one sister, Edith Steppe; and one nephew.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Madison. Burial will follow in Indiana Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Main Street Chapel Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Viola Higgins

Viola Earl Higgins, 87, of Madison died Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, at Hosparus Inpatient Unit of Norton Pavilion in Louisville.

She was born March 21, 1931, in Carrollton, Kentucky, the daughter of John Thomas and Nannie Bell Hughes Earl. She and her husband, Charles, farmed their farm near Fairview from 1974 to 1991. They moved to the Madison community in 1992. She delighted in taking care of her home, raising beautiful flowers, growing a garden, canning, baking and cooking. She was a member of Braytown Christian Church in Switzerland County. She enjoyed puzzles, reading and was excited about the upcoming December births of two more great-great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Glaab of Jeffersonville, Indiana and Kathy Potter and Linda Johnson, both of Madison, Indiana; three sons, Michael Higgins of Lexington, Indiana, Steven Higgins of Bennington, Indiana and Timothy Higgins of Madison; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hubert Higgins, whom she married May 16, 1947; her parents; one sister, Virginia Thomas; one brother, Thomas Earl; one granddaughter; and one grandson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service.
