Don Hill

Don R. Hill, 83, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, at home with family at his side.

He was born Jan. 29, 1935, in Cleton, Kentucky, the son of Orville and Iva McGuire Hill. He retired after 40 years as an administrator with the Rockwell Company in Madison, where he lived for some 40 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a talented woodworker, which he loved to do, as well as spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine T. Ruane Hill; two sons, Donald Patrick Hill and Michael David Hill; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one granddaughter.

There will be a funeral liturgy at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany, Indiana. Burial will follow in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday after 9 a.m. until the service.

Barbara Shelton

Barbara Jean Shelton, 82, of Mt. Summit, Indiana, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 12, 1936, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the daughter of Marshall W. and Thelma P. Lambert Johnson. She spent her early days on the family farm near Harrogate, Tennessee, and attended Ellen Myers Elementary school. The family moved to Scott County, Indiana in May 1949. She soon met Gerald “Bud” Shelton who lived on a neighboring farm. She attended Scottsburg High School and graduated as class salutatorian in May 1953. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington, majoring in English and classical languages and later earned a master’s degree in library science from Ball State University. She began her career in education in January 1957 at Mooreland High School. In 1962, she and her family moved to Modoc, Indiana, and Union High School. After her son was born, they soon moved to Mt. Summit, where they have lived ever since. She taught reading at Blue River Valley and organized the libraries at Mt. Summit and Mooreland elementary schools. In 1972, she became the head librarian at Shenandoah High School and served there until retiring in 1995. She was a member of the Indiana School Librarians Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, selected books for Ronald McDonald House charities and sponsored SHS library club and senior class. She was a member of Mt. Summit Christian Church and a former deaconess, librarian, Sunday school teacher and board president there. She will be remembered for her devotion to God and to the family she adored. She filled her life with love, hard work and service to others.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald “Bud” Shelton, whom she married Feb. 2, 1957; two daughters, Lisa Green of Middletown, Indiana, and Kathy McGriff of Franklin, Indiana; one son, Marshall Thomas of Avon, Indiana; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Middletown Church of the Nazarene in Middleton. Burial will follow in Miller Cemetery in Middletown.

Visitation will be at the church Tuesday from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m and Wednesday one hour before the service.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Mt. Summit Christian Church, Blue River Valley Dollars for Scholars or the Shenandoah Scholarship Foundation.

George Wood

George Hartman Wood, 90, of Bedford, Kentucky, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, at Richwood Nursing Center, LaGrange, Kentucky.

He was born July 28, 1928, in Bedford, the son of Chester and Jessie Peak Wood. He was a charter member of Bedford Volunteer Fire Department, and a Master Mason for 25 years. In his spare time, he was a lifelong avid golfer.

He is survived by his children, Lynn Joyce of Milton, Kentucky, and George Stanley Wood of Bedford; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Laverne Yeager Wood, whom he married April 16, 1952; and his parents.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will follow in Bedford Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the service.
