Russell Sellers

An informal memorial and memory sharing for Russell Eugene “Gene” Sellers, 71, formerly of Madison, Indiana, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 at Harry’s Stone Grill in Madison.

He died Nov. 26, 2016, in Tampa, Florida. He was born July 30, 1945, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison to James A. and Laura Burris Sellers. He graduated from Madison Consolidated High School in 1964 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was stationed in Cuba and Iceland, serving until 1968 when he was honorably discharged after a pulmonary embolism that many years later led to the amputation of his leg.

He moved to Florida and spent most of his career as a plant manager for marine equipment manufacturer Gray Enterprises Inc. He loved fishing and the outdoors and normally had a Coca-Cola and a dog by his side. He was a skilled and detailed carpenter and enjoyed making things with his hands. He was an avid sports fan — following the Oakland Raiders, San Antonio Spurs and boxing, especially Muhammad Ali — and he enjoyed learning and had an uncanny memory for history and nature facts and told endless entertaining stories about his own life and was always quick with a joke or a song to brighten the day.

He is survived by daughters Kristen Sellers and Brittany Sellers, both of Florida, a cousin Kathryn Larimore, also of Florida, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 2002; a brother, Jim Sellers in 2012; and an aunt, Flora Glore in 1999. His father died in 2017.

Friends and family — including his many classmates who will be in Madison this weekend for the Class of 1964’s 55th reunion — are welcome to attend an informal memorial and memory sharing, which will be led by his daughters.
