Charles Franklin Birchfield Jr., age 83, of Corydon, Indiana, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020, at the Indian Creek Nursing Home in Corydon, Indiana.

Cleve Callis

Cleve R. Callis, 71, of Madison, Indiana, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2020, at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.

Robert Fisse

Robert Samuel Fisse, 94, of Madison, Indiana, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020, at Hickory Creek of Madison there.

He was born Jan. 14, 1926, in Cincinnati, to Frank and Olga Lomatsch Fisse. He graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati and attended Ohio State University. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps on Dec. 14, 1943 and served during World War II, receiving the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on June 5, 1946. He married Hope LaVonne Hooton in 1954 and they had a son and a daughter. He was a dairy farmer early in life and later worked for Monsanto in Cincinnati and M & T Chemical in Carrollton, Kentucky. He also served as an inspector for the Jefferson County, Indiana Health Department and retired from the sales department of Master Products. He was a long-time member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Madison.

Survivors include his wife of Madison; a son, Jeff Fisse of Madison; and six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Jana Ann Mason, Oct. 24, 2010.

At Mr. Fisse’s request, all services are private. Interment will be in the Saint Paul Church Cemetery in Olean, Indiana.

Norm Hassfurder

Norman Louis “Norm” Hassfurder, 88, of Madison, Indiana, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020, at the Water’s of Clifty Falls in Madison.

He was born July 4, 1932 in Madison, to Louis Earl and Velena Mae O’Connell Hassfurder. He resided nearly all of his life in Madison and was a 1950 graduate of Madison High School. He was inducted into the US Navy on March 1, 1952 in Louisville and rose to the rate of Yeoman Second Class during the Korean War. His assignments included work as the chronograph operator at Newport Rhode Island, San Diego, California, Bainbridge Maryland, Iceland Defense Force Headquarters and Kelflavik, Iceland. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 19, 1956 at Brooklyn, New York receiving the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with his bachelor of science in 1960 and his masters in 1963 and was employed for more than 36 years with the Madison State Hospital where he served as the recreation director and rehabilitation therapist, retiring July 1994. He also worked early in life at the Madison Put Put Golf Coarse, was a member of the West Madison United Methodist Church, had attended Trinity United Methodist Church, the DeMolay, the St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge No. 14 in New Jersey and was raised on June 14, 1954, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Southern Hills Activities Directors Association, the IU Alumni Association, IU Varsity Club, Hoosier Hundred, the Woodburn Guild and the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Ireland, Germany and Belize, was an avid Indiana University basketball fan and one of the number one fans of the Madison Cubs. He enjoyed boating on the Ohio River, loved people — especially young people — and socializing.

Survivors include his nieces, Valerie Roberts and Tiffani Allyson Hunt Mundt and his nephew, Robert Briton Hunt; his cousin and caregiver, George Hassfurder of Elizabethtown, Indiana; and several other cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Nancy Carolyn Hassfurder Hunt; and his brother, Harold J. Hassfurder.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Visitation is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. until time of services and Friday at the funeral home.

A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday by the Masonic Lodge at the funeral home.

A final salute will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion at the funeral home with full military honors to follow at the graveside.

Lois Jackson

Lois Alma McQueen Jackson, 96, of Madison, Indiana, died Wednesday, Aug, 26, 2020, at the home of her daughter near Deputy, Indiana.

She was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Greensburg, Indiana, to the Reverend Arthur Bleamas McQueen and Ella Melinda Layton McQueen. She spent her early years in Decatur County, Indiana, and graduated from Letts High School in 1942. She married Dennis Myron Jackson on Dec. 26, 1942 and they had seven children. She was a mother, homemaker and child of God who helped support her family and ministries by working at the Conn Organ Plant, Russell Equipment and J.C. Penny. She was a member of the Madison Assembly of God and a gifted musician who enjoyed performing at the piano, She was involved in mission work in Haiti, and at nursing homes and prison ministries.

Survivors include three daughters, Denise Dailey of Deputy, Indiana, Debbie Hardy of Lexington, Indiana and Lissa Griffin of Dupont, Indiana; two sons, Myron Jackson of Vevay, Indiana and Jay Jackson of Canaan, Indiana; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren; three nieces, Lavita Shelton, Rosemary Day and Marilyn McQueen, who were special caregivers to her; and several other nieces, nephews and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 42 years in 1984; a son, Jody Marshall Jackson in 2007; a daughter, Erana Rae Jackson Elston in 2016; an infant brother, Arthur L. McQueen in 1904; two brothers, John Paul McQueen in 1971 and Willard Vernal McQueen in 1974; and a sister, Leah Lucille McQueen Baldwin in 1991.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Springdale Cemetery in downtown Madison. Visitation is 3 p.m. until time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Terry Jennings

Terry Martin Jennings, 60, of Hanover, Indiana, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020, at King’s Daughters’ Health in Madison, Indiana.

He was born on Nov. 28, 1959, in Louisville, to Richard and Ruby Butler Jennings. He was a retired construction worker, a resident of Choice Christian Care Community in Hanover and attended Christ Temple in Madison.

He is survived by his daughter and his care giver, Tirree Jenkins, of Hanover.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
