Navy Midshipman David T. Turner recently completed 'Plebe' Summer at the U.S. Navy Academy.

Plebe Summer began June 27 and concluded after seven weeks of basic midshipman training.

Throughout the summer, new midshipmen gain general knowledge of seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing and handling yard patrol craft. They also learn how to use 9mm pistols and M-16 rifles.

Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected each year for the academy's plebe or freshman class. This year the Naval Academy received over 17,500 applications for the class of 2017.

Turner is the son of Sandy C. and Michael D. Turner of Madison. He is a 2013 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School.

Cadet Hayden Charles McMahon completed Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy.

McMahon entered West Point on July 1 and successfully completed six weeks of basic training.

The initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion, confidence and a high sense of duty to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Areas of summer instruction included first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship and nuclear, biological, and chemical training.

McMahon began classes Aug. 19.

He is the son of Terrence and Charisa McMahon of Madison. He is a graduate of Madison Consolidated High School and a member of the West Point class of 2017.

Navy Seaman Shane A. Jackson along with other sailors assigned aboard the nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman arrived in the U.S. 5th Fleet's Area of Responsibility after the ship completed a routine transit through the Suez Canal.

Truman is on a scheduled deployment conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions for Operation Enduring Freedom. He deployed July 22 from Norfolk, Va.

Jackson joined the Navy in March 2013.
