Rather than choose just one fairy tale, the Madison Junior High School Drama Club will perform a modern classic this weekend that blends some of the best.

Students will present “Into the Woods,” at 6 p.m. Friday in the junior high school cafeteria with a second performance at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The musical, which made its Broadway debut in 1987, tells the intertwined story of several well-known fairy tale characters such as Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella. A Disney film adaptation was released in 2014, starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine.

Stage productions have won the show various awards including two Tony Awards for best score and best book and later in 2002 for best revival.

This weekend’s production is a junior version, which was adapted for younger actors by removing the second half of the show and parts of the first act as well. The performance should last about 50 minutes.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $5.

The cast of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders includes: Jaylah Abbott, Mitchell Adams, Anneliese Crumley, Adrianna Dattilo, Madison Ginn, Adriana Hart, Alli Holcroft, Logan Hutchinson, Izabela Jett, Crislyn Karnof, Jayme Lee, Ethan Mack, Ruby Massie, Mia Mires, Brooklyn Osterman, Morgan Preston-Klein, McKalyn Stewart, Hannah Taylor, Alicia Vega, Diego Vega and Nick Whitaker.
