Jefferson and Scott County Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the Indiana Department of Natural hosted the 13th Annual Hardy Lake Sweep on April 26.

More than 200 volunteers donated their morning picking up waste and debris in and around the watershed area of Hardy Lake State Reservoir. The event falls around the national celebrations of Earth Day and the National Association of Conservation Districts Stewardship Week.

Volunteers picked up approximately 2,300 pounds of trash and put in more than 800 hours of volunteer time worth about $17,492. Participants received a bandana, commemorative patch, lunch and a free night of camping.

The event is intended to educate the community on the problems of illegal dumping and littering in Scott and Jefferson counties. Littering has a harmful effect on our environment and places an economic burden on landowners and the local government.

The date for next year's sweep has been set for the April 25, 2015. For more information call the Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District at (812) 273-2070, ext. 3.
