Rusty, top, is a gentleman that misses being home and doesn't seem to like it at the shelter. He is looking for a home that will spoil him. Rusty is a 7 to 8-year-old, short-haired, orange tabby. He is neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. His adoption fee is $45.

Ramona, bottom, is a playful girl that wants to play with people. She will also play with other dogs. She is a small, tan and white, 3 to 5-year-old Terrier mix. She weighs 23 pounds. She is much more outgoing now than when she first came to the shelter.

The Madison-Jefferson County Animal Shelter currently has more than nine dogs and puppies, and six cats and kittens available. Pictures of additional pets waiting for adoption can be seen at

Normal shelter hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m., Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. It is closed Tuesday. The shelter number is (812) 273-1788 and their email is

The shelter is collecting aluminum cans for the dog and cat medical fund. Donors can drop off rinsed and dried aluminum cans at the shelter.

Volunteers are always welcome at the shelter to help with walking dogs, playing with puppies and kittens and many other tasks. Volunteers must be 16 years old.

Animals should not be abandoned outside of the shelter or dropped off at the shelter after hours.
