Penelope, top, is happy, outgoing and likes to make new friends. She is an active 1 to 2-year-old that weighs 30 pounds. She is a black and tan German shepherd mix. She can climb fences and will need a home with a tall privacy fence, an invisible fence or be leash-walked to keep her safe.

Ambre, bottom, is a pretty girl with golden eyes and an inquisitive nature. She is affectionate. She is very nurturing, she took care of her litter of kittens and then three other litters. She is a 1 to 3-year-old short-hair, brown tabby.

The Madison-Jefferson County Animal Shelter currently has more than 17 dogs and puppies, and 19 cats and kittens available. Pictures of additional pets waiting for adoption can be seen at

The shelter will be closed Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Normal shelter hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m., Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. It is closed Tuesday. The shelter number is (812) 273-1788 and their email is

The shelter is in serious need of canned and dry kitten food and puppy food. They are not currently in need of newspapers. The shelter is still collecting aluminum cans for the dog and cat medical fund. Donors can drop off rinsed and dried aluminum cans at the shelter.

Volunteers are always welcome at the shelter to help with walking dogs, playing with puppies and kittens and many other tasks. Volunteers must be 16 years old.

Animals should not be abandoned outside of the shelter or dropped off at the shelter after hours.
