    To the Editor:

Earlier this week my family had the difficult job of laying our father, brother and uncle, Don Vaughn, to rest. It was hard to say good bye but we took great comfort in the actions of the City of Madison, the Fairplay Fire Company and Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre to honor him, and I write this letter to thank everyone involved.

    To the Editor:

As Christmas approaches, the staff at Madison State Hospital want to thank this wonderful community for the generosity shown to our patients in previous years. We ask again that you remember the patients at Madison State Hospital in your holiday plans. While preparing for joyous holiday celebrations with your family and friends, please be mindful that not everyone is so fortunate.

    Dear Editor:
Voters in Indiana’s Sixth Congressional District face a dramatic choice in November. On one side, we have Jeannine Lee Lake, a mother and a journalist who supports Medicare for all and tuition-free public higher education.
  • When Cub basketball was king, Don Firth made the hoops ring
    Saturday, August 25, 2018 9:00 AM
A Cub star has winged his way to heaven. Don Firth is the one, taking with him tales of Hoosier Hysteria that would stun anyone.

While visiting Madison recently, as I frequently did in years past, I was appalled to find no downtown grocery store. How can this be?

By now, most of you are probably aware that the Ohio Theatre sustained fire damage on June 28. Plain and simple, our brave local fire fighters saved the building. The volunteers quickly developed a safe strategy for extinguishing the fire and executed that plan with efficiency.

    To the editor:

American society has become impatient with the speed at which government policy, rules and laws can be properly implemented.

    To the editor:

I am writing to encourage Madison residents to plant large-stature trees in their yards.

Dear Editor: Regarding the photo on the front page of the Madison Courier dated June 30, 2018: The photo of the Ohio Theatre marquee show the feature, “The Fountainhead” starring Gary Cooper; that movie was from 1949.

During the decade that the West Street Art Center was in operation, proprietor Peter Ellis made a huge cultural impact on Madison, Indiana.
  • Saturday, March 31, 2018 9:00 AM
It was good to see my friend Mike Walro’s response to my letter of March 20th. As Mike points out, changing the abortion law would be extremely difficult, but I don’t believe that we are “stuck” with it.

    To the Editor:

It may seem unusual to write a letter about an article featured in another newspaper, the recent New York Times story, “Suicides, Drug Addiction and High School Football”.
  • Thursday, March 29, 2018 3:00 PM
I would like to send a Big Thank You to the Southwestern basketball team of 2017-2018.
  • Thursday, March 29, 2018 3:00 PM
The Southwestern Boys basketball team and coaching staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Hanover and Madison communities for their incredible support of our basketball team not only during this season but also the State Tournament run.

    To the editor:

I have to disagree with my friend Ben Newell, a truly good man, with his advice not to vote (Madison Courier, March 20). I too am pro-life and abhor the fact that abortion is the law of the land, but until the Constitution is changed or the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court change its rulings, we are stuck with abortion as a possible outcome in this country. I agree we should let our senators and representatives know our beliefs, but my advice is then to vote your values.

    To the editor:

In response to the latest school shootings, Rep. John Yarmuth of Louisville declared that those that didn’t take his position of gun control were culpable in the gun violence that rages through our society.

    To the editor:

Are there no laws in this county?

You race down our streets, you run every stop sign,

you throw your trash and beer cans in our yards.

    To the Editor:

It appears to me that the Mustangs, glass-packed appointed pickup trucks and other speedsters who approach the East-bound Walnut Street stoplight have become impatient. I say impatient because from my front porch I can hear and see them go with pedal to the metal down East Main.

    To the editor:

I am writing today to advocate for those under current Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protection, the DREAMers. DACA enables illegal immigrants, brought to America as a “DREAMer” to work without citizenship status.

    To the Editor:

The Women’s March in January this year and last got a lot of media coverage and supposedly included all women. There was a group of women not included, at least that we know of for sure in the January 2017 March for Women in D.C. and Vegas. It is probably the same this year in 2018 from listening to what their agenda is. Groups of Pro Life Women were turned down for the official Women’s March in D.C. and Vegas when they applied to be in the march of January 2017. The Women’s March was reported as having marches in cities in the U.S. and elsewhere.
