Jimmy Shane steered the U-1 Miss HomeStreet/Miss Madison to the top qualifying spot for this weekend’s season-ending Bill Muncy Cup on Mission Bay in San Diego on Friday.

Shane recorded a top lap speed of 159.679 mph on the 2.5-mile course to pick up his fourth qualifying award of the year. It was also the third-straight for the team’s new “White” hull.

Only three other teams recorded speeds during the abbreviated session. Newly crowned national champion — and defending race champion — Andrew Tate was second fastest at 157.714 in the U-9 Delta/Realtrac.

Brian Perkins U-21 PayneWest Insurance experienced engine issues but still managed a speed of 137.490 for third-fastest while Dustin Echols was fourth in the U-440 Bucket List Racing at 136.773.

Tom Thompson was unable to get his U-11 J&Ds out on the water while Aaron Salmon and the U-99.9 Miss Rock opted not to run.

Preliminary heat racing will begin today at 6 p.m. EDT and will continue throughout the weekend. The final heat is scheduled for a 7:10 p.m. EDT on Sunday.
