    Jerry Bomholt picked up his first win as a head coach back on Jan. 18, 1980 when Anderson Highland defeated Pendleton Heights — the same year Bomholt won his first sectional championship. Fast forward to Jan. 19, 2018 and the legendary head coach was picking up another monumental victory and etching his name into Indiana high school basketball history in the process.

    GREENSBURG — Madison got off to a great start against Class 3A No. 6 Greensburg, jumping out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter to look poised to return home with a huge boys basketball upset.

    The second half, Greensburg told a very different story.

    Switzerland County trailed by one at the end of the first quarter but it was all Rising Sun the rest of the way as the Shiners blitzed the Pacers 79-59 in an Ohio River Valley Conference boys basketball game on Friday night.

    Walton-Verona’s girls basketball team completed the school’s All “A” Classic Eighth Region basketball tourney sweep on Friday night by turning back Carroll County 72-36 to add a girls regional title to the boys regional championship the school won Wednesday.

    Trimble girls basketball only led one time in the game against District 29 opponent South Oldham Thursday.

    The lead evaported quickly and it was all South Oldham from that point forward.

    Madison’s swim teams swept South Dearborn Thursday night with the girls grinding out a 79-78 win and the boys winning 86-65 at the Junior High pool.

    The Lady Cubs won four individual events and one relay while the Madison boys won four individual events and three relays.

    Switzerland County girls basketball bounced back from four straight losses Thursday and rode a big second half to a 47-40 win over Oldenburg Academy in Vevay.

    Carroll County boys basketball led 11-8 after one quarter, but a strong second quarter by host Owen County staked the Rebels to a 24-17 halftime lead. The teams battled close the rest of the way before Owen held on for a 59-54 District 31 seeding win at Owenton.

    After playing seven straight road games over 39 days, Hanover women’s basketball needed four quarters and two extra periods to fend off visiting Mount St. Joseph 99-90 in double overtime on Wednesday at Collier Arena.

    Trinity Lutheran looked to be in control of Wednesday’s boys basketball game at Shawe Memorial after a huge scoring run gave the Cougars the first quarter lead 18-14.

    But the final three quarters belonged to Shawe.

    Southwestern’s balanced scoring attack and 61.4 points per game team average has helped the Rebels get off to a 13-1 start on the season and a Top 10 ranking in Class 2A so it’s no surprise that all five Rebels starters found a place on our midseason Top 20 scoring list for the Courierarea.

    Barring a string of disastrous performances, Shawe’s Kate Grote is looking pretty solid to lead all Courierarea girls in scoring for the 2017-2018 season.

    The Hilltopper junior is averaging 19.1 points per game — almost 3 points more than the next highest scorer — and has cracked 30 points twice this season including 35 on Nov. 21 against Medora and 32 later against South Decatur.
